Geoff 'BIRO' Bernardt

A while ago i was painting down South when this man Geoff 'BIRO' Bernardt started talking to me.

He was really interested in what we were doing and told me how he had seen this style of painting in Paris in the mid 1980's,
He then began talking about his own art career in which he sold over 4000 paintings and lived and taught throughout Europe.

Back in the day Geoff used to fill his car with all the paintings he had in his studio and used to sell them on
the street. Hanging them on railings, billboards and even just putting them onto his car.

After a while he went home and came back with some portfolios and a homemade savoy truffle and showed me his work...

This picture was done in the style of Roger Hargreaves who was and still is one of my favorite artists of all time.
I wanted to tell a story in a similar manner to the way he told his. A simple picture with a more serious message behind it - Which simultaneously appeals to all ages.

I wanted a kid of any age to like the picture visually and an adult to see past that and like the picture for the context it was in.

The tags on the inside of the door relate to people who may of been in a similar situation to Grandfather Clock, (who is a lesser known character of Roger Hargreaves). Grandfather clocks trick or talent is that he can turn into a clock or more technically the Time.

Some graffiti writers sometimes end up in a situation like 'Grandfather Clock' - As in they themselves turn into a set of numbers and the time. Also that sometimes they don't get the 'fame' of some of the other characters/graffiti writers in time gone by...

I used cold tea in the painting on the door and on the floor for a number of different reasons, One being that when i was in a similar situation - i used to put drawings on the floor and splash tea onto them for colour.

The book the character is reading is used to represent a persons memory. As people have been recording their life experiences through books since the dawn of day. The character although in a shit situation is smiling to himself whilst he reads through his 'rainbow coloured memories'.

I named the painting 'Teenage Dream' (whatever happened to?) after the song by Marc Bolan - As it was the original inspiration behind the picture.
Also because Marc Bolan was another one of these 'characters' that was never represented in the way he wished, nor destined to ever gain the respect & understanding he spent his life looking for.

A print exhibition of the letters A-Z by 26 artists
In conjunction with OFFSET festival

'SHOWOFF' is a group show which will showcase a wide variety of talent from some of Ireland’s established commercial artists to some of the countries most exciting emerging creative minds. These participants come from a variety of creative fields, including illustration, graphic design, photography, textiles and many more.

Each of the selected artists were given a letter of the alphabet at random, and were then asked to create a visual solution for their individual letter.

The results were then reproduced as a limited set of prints.
All the works were on show in 'Article' in the Powerscourt Townhouse Dublin, from the 30th of September until the end of October.

I was given the letter T

I wanted to create one figure to represent a range of Authoritative Companies and Organizations.

I started by drawing a lightning bolt representing both power and danger in one, whilst turning it into a man running - wearing a uniform.

I Kept the man faceless (without an identity) as anyone could be or can become part of any authority - A man without a face cannot be held accountable for anything they may not wish to be.

The full set of unform men ascending in Rainbow colour represents as 1 .Non-Conformists - 2. Police - 3. Labour - 4. Network Rail. 5. liberal democrats - 6. Army - 7. Conservative

Only the colour of the uniform makes them detectable from each other

I put them up with the Conservative man on his own. As at the time they were framed was the same time as when the Conservative party had won the most votes in this year's election but not the overall majority.Which resulted in a hung parliament where no party was able to command a majority in the House of Commons. So although they were out in front and winning - they were potentially alone and losing

'Krek' Watercolour i did a while back.

Most things in the picture like the red and yellow 'Glove' trail going through the piece are inspired by Heinz Edelmann's 1968 animated film The Yellow Submarine.
